A Boatman & His Dog Cruising Along in the Cannaregio Sestiere, Venice

Here we are along the Rio della Misericordia, a main thoroughfare in this neighborhood. It was a quiet winter morning, and the boatman you see is all hunched up against the wind, with his hat and jacket on - barely visible next to the real skipper of the boat, his friendly and alert furry companion.
Where I live, men and their dogs are generally seen in trucks, along the highway. In Venice, where there are no trucks or cars, it is the boatmen, going to work doing construction, or deliveries, that are often accompanied by their furry friends. Despite the cold, this sweet dog was standing proudly up against the prow, making sure the way was clear!! :o) I couldn't resist taking a picture!

These are the living waterways of everyday Venice, where the everyday people in their little boats (and dogs!) get around, doing their errands and going to work. Just wonderful to explore this very typical and authentic part of living Venice.

Qui siamo lungo Rio della Misericordia, uno dei canali principali n questo vicinato. Era una mattina d’inverno tranquilla, e il barcaiolo che si vede nella barca è tutto l'incurvato su se stesso, controvento, imbacuccato con cappello e giacca - appena visibile dietro al vero capitano della barca, il suo peloso compagno, amichevole e sveglio. Dove vivo, gli uomini ed i loro cani sono visti generalmente nei camion, lungo l'autostrada. A Venezia, dove non ci sono camion o automobili, sono i barcaioli, mentre vanno al lavoro, nei cantieri o a fare consegne, che sono accompagnati dai loro amici pelosi. Malgrado il freddo, questo cane dolce stava in piedi fieramente sulla prua, assicurandosi che la via fosse libera!! : O) Non ho potuto resistere ed ho preso questa foto! Questi sono le vie navigabili viventi di Venezia di tutti i giorni, dove le persone normali nelle loro piccole barche (ed i cani)! va in giro, facendo le loro commissioni ed andando a lavorare. È meraviglioso esplorare queste parti tipiche ed autentiche della Venezia reale.
