Honey, where's my wide angle lens?
Typically a shorter focal length is used to capture Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park near Moab, Utah. But this place is beautiful no matter what lens you use.

Monumental Scenery
Classic, evening view of the "Mittens" in Monument Valley, Navajo Nation. This was taken during the same session as an image posted earlier which had a shorter focal length. There were 10 or so photographers in front of these foreground rocks which are on the edge of the visitor center parking lot.

Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park. Usually you try to catch the sun under the arch. Today there was a rain storm in the distance so I waited a bit and settled for the sunrise over the arch ;-)

Waited until dark to catch the sunset color at Delicate Arch in Arches National Park, Utah. The 1.3 mile hike down required my camera CCD cleaning flash light which I happened to have in my camera bag.

Where Light and Rock Meet
Lower Antelope slot canyon. I usually try to limit my uploads to one a day and I truly appreciate all of your comments and invites on my stream. I'm just trying to get through all of the images I have from this trip.
We spent two days in Lower Antelope slot canyon (about 3 hrs. each day). This one is less traveled and a little quieter than Upper Antelope slot because all of the tours from Page go to upper. You can drive right to this one and have guided or unguided walk throughs. Middle of the day is the best time and even then the lighting is subdued so bring a tripod! It's dusty down in the slots so try to minimize lens changes or better yet take two bodies with the lens you need and don't change (wide angle is usually best. I can't imagine needing much more than 100mm).

A Utah Classic
Delicate Arch in Arches National Park with the LaSalle Mountains in the background. This shot was while I was waiting for sunset and an image I posted earlier. There were about 50 other photographers there but all were polite and stayed away from the arch except for a few, brief "you were there" shots.

Run like the Wind
Three Navajo horses ran across our path while touring Monument Valley. I was quick enough to get my camera but not quick enough to change from aperture priority f22 and hence the slow shutter, but I don't think it would have been as dynamic if I had time to plan the shot. Just a lot of luck!

Lake Powell Twilight
Calm evening on Lake Powell, the lake formed by the Glen Canyon Dam. The lake is down over 100 feet and is less than half capacity. Many wonder if it will ever refill because of reduced precipitation in the western United States as a result of global warming. A portion of the Wahweap marina is visible on the left. Much of the low lying area in the distance is under water when the lake was at higher levels.

Paria Painted Dunes
Late afternoon view of layered sandstone in Grand Staircase-Escalante National monument in southern Utah. Taken near the old Paria town site.
A beautiful day trip from Lake Powell, the old town is about 40 minutes from Page heading north on 89 towards Kanab. There is a marker and a sign that says “Old Paria Town site.” After cruising a dirt road for several miles, you turn the corner and a spray of painted desert dunes greets you. The road begins to wind down to a rebuilt movie set. The set has been restored and was burned down by vandals last year. This was a suprise to our guide because one of the reasons we went down was to photograph the old building replicas. The scenery itself was worth the trip though. Late afternoon and evening light is a great time to photograph here.

La Posada Hotel | Winslow, Arizona
The La Posada Hotel was designed by Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter and opened in 1930. The Santa Fe Railroad stopped at the front gate, and guests frequently spent time here for luxurious travel comforts. Visitors to La Posada include President Franklin Roosevelt, Albert Einstein, James Cagney, Charles Lindbergh (who designed the Winslow airport), Amelia Earhart, and Howard Hughes.
The property eventually declined, closed in 1957, and was to be torn down. Colter died believing that her greatest achievement would soon be destroyed. In recent years, however, it has undergone extensive renovation and was reopened in 1997.
Thanks to Claire and Dr. Doc for telling us about about La Posada. We made reservations and stayed in the "John Wayne" room. (Each room is named for a celebrity who had stayed here).
La Posada is unlike any hotel I've ever visited. It's elegant, yet rustic and quirky. Each room is different, reflecting the tastes of the person for whom it is named. The restaurant is outstanding and the front yard is huge. Strolling through the hallways, lobby, foyer, and the ballroom is like a visit to a favorite museum. The arcades in front and the sunken garden in back are ideal places for an early morning cup of coffee.
The room rate is much less expensive than you'd expect. Although the main building is huge (larger than the Hearst Castle), there are not many rooms for guests -- you do need to plan ahead for reservations.
I talked to a visitor from Phoenix who has stayed here 33 times. He and his wife schedule visits to their daughter in Colorado based on La Posada's room availability. Had I not visited this place, I wouldn't have understood.
On Route 66, Winslow, AZ, USA.
